Palpitations and Heart Rhythm Questions: Virtual Cardiology Visit Guide

Exploring palpitations through a cardiology visit

A fluttering, skipping, racing, or irregular heartbeat may have many causes. A clinician reviews the symptom pattern, associated features, history, medications, and prior testing to determine the next clinical steps.

Prepare a helpful symptom record

Record when episodes began, their approximate duration, possible triggers, associated dizziness or breathlessness, and any available pulse readings or clinician obtained electrocardiograms. Bring relevant prior ECG, patch monitor, echocardiogram, or emergency care reports if available.

Choosing an appropriate care setting

New or severe chest pain, fainting, severe difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, or other emergency symptoms call for immediate emergency medical assessment. For scheduled nonemergency questions, the practice can confirm the appropriate cardiology visit option and whether local testing or examination may be needed.
